Stephanie Pavlou had always known since she was a little girl that she would become a fashion designer. With the launch of her latest campaign Read between the Lines, we chat to to the talented lady behind the unique, geometrical designs.
Where did your passion for fashion come from?
Well from the age of four I became my own stylist to my mum’s dismay and would pick out my own outfits and treated kinder like my very own fashion show. My mum and aunties were always impeccably dressed with great style and I loved shopping with them, as they were my first style icons. I also loved to draw and from a young age I began making my own clothes, and I pursued this love for fashion by studying a Bachelor of Fashion (Design) Honours at RMIT. As a child, I would be asked ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ I would always say I want to be a fashion designer.
Your new campaign has a lot of geometric cuts and shapes. What was the inspiration behind this?
My new collection and campaign ‘Read between the Lines’ was inspired by the concept of maps and the connection between the road lines and details on historical and contemporary maps. I used this inspiration to generate my own visual maps on the body through my signature embellishment techniques creating lines and patterns on the garments.
Do you have a favourite from your new collection?
Having spent the last few months working hard on the collection, it is difficult for me to choose a favourite, but if I had to choose one, it would be the Anna Black Crop Top, Anna Panel jacket and matching Panel Pants, which is a three piece set perfect for a night out with the girls, as it exudes confidence and ensures you stand out from the crowd.
What is your personal fashion style? Do you think this influences the way you create your pieces?
My personal style is feminine with an edge, fitted silhouettes and a touch of sparkle, whether it be in embellishments or jewelry. I love a black and white colour palette, and looking fabulous without sacrificing comfort, which is an element incorporated in my collection. My personal style definitely influences my collections as embellishment is a focal point as well as figure hugging silhouettes.
What is your fashion philosophy?
To me fashion provides us with an opportunity to express ourselves visually and I believe confidence is the most important contributing factor to this. As Rachel Zoe once said, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak”. And with that in mind I have been able to
empower women to be confident with how they present themselves, and never be afraid to stand out and make a grand entrance.
If you could dress anyone in the world, who would it be?
This would definitely be Jennifer Lopez! She is an iconic musician and Leo like myself, with an innate confidence and looks amazing for her age. She is an inspiration to women of all ages, to work hard for their goals and aspirations and I love her glamorous embellished style.
