Born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Max Mackie's family moved to the States in the late 90’s. It was around that time that he began experimenting with art, sketching portraits and fashion illustrations. Soon after, he discovered digital art and became interested in the limitless and flexible nature of the medium.
Bold colours play a big part in your illustrations. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I love telling a story using coulours. I am heavily inspired by editorial fashion, specifically the way designers create collections around one specific theme or colour combination.
What’s the best thing about being an illustrator?
The best thing about being an illustrator is being able to visually express your ideas, you can put whatever’s in your head on paper and are only limited by your imagination.
Other than art, what else are you passionate about?
I also have a passion for food. I love to eat... everything.
What style of music do you like the listen to when you are creating?
I tend to listen to whatever Spotify has on my Discover Weekly playlist while illustrating—usually something retro, dancy and synthy.
